If I were Greek...

If I were a Greek and a businessman, it would be clear to me. My business would have a very dark future in the Eurozone with a wildly recessionary economy. With rising taxes aiming at desperate tax collection and consumption collapsing, my sales and chances of survival would be nil. And if my business had the capacity to export, I would also not be able to support it with a euro as expensive as the current one, as my competitiveness would be and will be at rock bottom in a foreign exchange environment that only German productivity will withstand. What do Guardiola and Trueba have in common?

Below is one of the videos that BSabadell uses to promote itself. It features what appears to be a casual conversation between Josep Guardiola and Fernando Trueba. Personally, they may have little in common, but professionally they easily find common ground between their respective fields. After all, both are managers and both create spectacles for the masses. Their reflections on how to manage their respective teams are very interesting, because they agree that both must pay particular attention to personal relationships. (more…)

Panic, Mr Market and the Value of Business.

Some predict that this is a crucial week for the future of the Eurozone. These are the days when it will be decided how and in what way the EFSF, which in turn must put out the fires in a periphery that is absolutely ablaze and spreading. Furthermore, and linked to this quest to square the circle, it seems that the Greek default is set to be quantified, at least this first one. (more…)

La Caixa and the State as examples of desperation.

I know this isn’t exactly news, but I simply cannot resist publicly denouncing a particular advert that has been flooding the media of late, and which I find particularly sickening, reprehensible, immoral, dangerous, vile, despicable—and who knows how many more adjectives I could come up with. It is not just misleading advertising, like so many others, but this one also distorts the harsh reality and misleads savers on a subject as sensitive and sacred as their families’ money. (more…)

You can’t see the wood for the trees

‘Preserving in turbulent times’ is not the title of this summer’s soap opera, but rather the pressing need for all those who manage their own wealth. It is also one of the guiding principles for some wealth managers working on behalf of others, though unfortunately the latter tend to be more concerned with retaining their long-suffering clients commercially by reducing their volatility, rather than preserving their assets and ensuring their sound long-term growth. Unfortunately, many managers of other people’s money are more interested in today’s bread (their own) and, in their short-sightedness, ignore tomorrow’s hunger (that of their clients and also their own). This brings us back to the old debate as to whether one should only entrust one’s money to advisers who have built up their own wealth and who co-invest with their clients, or whether any independent broker with sufficient technical training would suffice. But that is a discussion worthy of another article. (more…)

The People’s Bank of China’s ‘Twist and Shout’

People’s Bank of China It is the giant central bank of the giant economy of the giant country known as China. In fact, in that macro-state, everything dwarfs us and, by comparison, makes us feel small – a fitting and necessary exercise in modesty that we Westerners have needed for years. China’s economic scale is such that its political decisions can sway the markets in whatever direction best suits the Communist Party. You may well be wondering what this has to do with the title of the article; well, here’s the answer: (more…)

Bruce Berkowitz and Value in the financial sector

Today we’re bringing you a real gem in the form of an interview. It is none other than the one given by the best fund manager of the first decade of the 21st century, Bruce Berkowitz, to the prestigious financial journalist Consuelo Mack just seven days ago. It is fascinating to read Berkowitz’s arguments and convictions today, right in the midst of the financial storm, when his flagship fund, Fairholme, has lost almost a third of its value since the start of the year. A slump that many see as a sign of his decline as a fund manager, but which some view as a huge opportunity. His interviewer, Mack, is regarded by *Money Magazine* as «the best money TV host», and her programmes attract a huge audience. Enjoy Berkowitz’s reflections whilst the financial world crumbles around us (we’ll be posting the full Spanish translation shortly): (more…)

Nouriel Roubini: How can we avoid a second Great Depression?

Today we would like to discuss the arguments put forward by Nouriel Roubini in his article «How to prevent depression» published this week on the Reuters blog «The Great Debate«Let us remember that Roubini is a highly respected economist who accurately predicted the great financial crisis of 2008, although at the time he was branded as nothing short of a doomsayer, earning himself the nickname “Dr Doom”. Subsequent events have shown that this label was, unfortunately, unjustified. (more…)

Siemens pulls its money out of French banks...

A word of warning. Today, Bloomberg has published a deeply troubling report from the Financial Times: the German multinational Siemens AG withdrew 500 million euros from a French bank last week and deposited the funds with the European Central Bank. (more…)

George Soros: Does the Euro have a future?

Yes, but no. This seems to be the direction the EU is taking with its existential doubts. An uncertain course with the pretence of treading water, buying time, hoping that the Eurozone will still be able to breathe, when the sun wants to rise over a horizon that today is still black, very black.
