As you quite rightly say, DJ, we should try, as far as we are able, to play an active rather than a passive role in this situation. By having our say and taking action at our own level. And, of course, by trying to protect our assets from losing value. Keeping a close watch so that we can make the most of any opportunity that comes our way blending in like never before amidst the daily stream of bad news and unfortunate events. If we keep a cool head and our assets secure, shielded from losses and unaffected by the stress of negative impacts, we will be best placed to devise and implement the most appropriate strategy at any given time. We will need to be free from the capital losses that are affecting 99.9% of assets, whether in property, business or financial investments. Only in this way can we maintain the optimal analytical capacity we will need to process events we could never have imagined, whilst at the same time finding a diamond in the rough. And only in this way can we also address the four problems you mention in your article: a lack of clear objectives, a lack of perspective, and a lack of rigour and critical thinking.

At this stage, we may make mistakes time and time again. Some will be more successful and/or luckier than others, but if we have started from a position where our wealth is shielded from the capital losses suffered day in, day out by the majority, if we manage to be part of that 0.1% of wealth that has liquidity and does not suffer any loss of value in its business or property assets, we will be in a very privileged position to face this New Era. If, on the other hand, we suffer from a lack of financial agility, flawed strategic analysis, and lose value in property, businesses and also in our financial investments, we may not survive (in financial terms) to be able to manage our assets under new rules of the game and on a new playing field.

Before anyone asks, I’ll just point out that The strategy for safeguarding wealth against property, financial and business losses must be tailored to each family’s individual circumstances. Nevertheless, it is worth noting that common sense tells us that one should avoid holding property in markets such as the Spanish one, investing in companies that are in debt and/or have few competitive advantages in this crisis-hit environment, or taking on financial risks that could lead to significant losses. This is easy to say but difficult and complex to put into practice.

In most cases, it is a process lasting many months, but one that should have been set in motion a year and a half ago, when the global financial system creaked under pressure as never before and when the losses were more manageable. Take a look at the dates of the articles in which we warned unprecedented imbalances; or when We condemn the property market crash; or even when the stock market experienced its first turbulence which highlighted the serious state of the system – a situation many of us had already begun to realise since the summer of 2007. You say you don’t know anyone who hasn’t been affected by the crisis, who has managed to avoid financial losses. Let me tell you that Most of our clients have achieved this or are in the process of doing so, although a minority have only achieved this to a limited extent, due to the specific nature of their assets or a lack of decisiveness, flexibility and determination to adapt their assets to current needs. But it is absolutely true that these clients of CFO are the exception, and that the majority of ordinary people continue to wander about like zombies, losing the value of their assets without even really realising it. Through this blog, we aim to open the eyes of those who do not know us personally, and we have been doing so with a back catalogue of over 250 articles written from a few months before the credit crisis became apparent and terms such as ‘subprime’, ‘securitisation’, ‘CDS’ and a very long list of others became commonplace. I sincerely believe it is very interesting to reread what we published as the system began to crumble.

What you’re saying about treating household finances as if they were a business is very similar to what we do with assets and their respective Vital Balance. If anyone wishes to explore a particular topic in greater depth, they know they can get in touch by email and ask any questions.
