Portugal votes \u2018NO\u2019 to the fourth version of the budgetary adjustment and austerity plan. Prime Minister Jos\u00e9 S\u00f3crates, who was governing with a minority government, resigns and hands over the reins of a country adrift financially in an ocean called the Market, teeming with hungry sharks.<\/p>\n

The Portuguese have thrown themselves into the arms of Mummy EU for a bailout. The Greeks had manipulated and falsified their figures \u2013 undoubtedly a very serious matter \u2013 but their apparent attitude was that of dejected politicians who were aware of the gravity of the problem. However, the apparent attitude of the Portuguese politicians is that of abandoning the helm of the ship in the face of their inability to steer it, confident that Big Brother will come to their rescue.<\/p>\n

\"\"Because it seems that the Portuguese, the Irish, the Greeks and probably the Spanish take it for granted that bailouts will be provided promptly and efficiently. And we\u2019re willing to accept the impossible \u2013 that is, de facto intervention in our domestic economic management \u2013 in exchange for being kept in the Eurozone despite being bankrupt. At this stage, we must remember obvious truths such as the fact that the markets wouldn\u2019t give us a penny without the support of \u2018Mummy EU\u2019. And it seems that yesterday the Portuguese did not even consider the possibility of being relegated to mere prey for the sharks. How easy (and irresponsible) it is to vote \u2018NO\u2019 to tightening the belt when you are convinced that the Seventh Cavalry (in its German version) will come to the rescue.<\/p>\n

What strikes me as most surreal is that an economy like Germany\u2019s is prepared to bail out a country whose politicians, with all the nerve in the world, have just voted NO to some basic economic adjustments in light of their financial situation. Either none of us in the PIGS are aware of the situation we\u2019re in, or we\u2019re being incredibly, incredibly cheeky.<\/p>\n

It seems as though some people are saying: \u00abLet Germany catch us having confessed\u2026 or without having confessed, but let it catch us anyway.\u00bb Although we mustn\u2019t forget that the world doesn\u2019t end with the Eurozone and that there\u2019s life out there too. What is clear is that without bailouts, there won\u2019t be much left of it for much longer.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
