\u00abA thought I\u2019ve had: there have been some complaints from progressives within the movement about the centrist stance and orthodoxy of Obama\u2019s economic appointments. To some extent, I think this was unavoidable: someone like the Chancellor of the Exchequer has to be an experienced figure who can deal with Wall Street, and I haven\u2019t heard anyone proposing specific individuals with stronger progressive credentials to hold that post. (And for those of you wondering about yours truly \u2014 I\u2019m not cut out for it, have never had any desire for the job, and probably have more influence as an outside gadfly than I ever could in DC.) <\/p>\n

But the Obama administration\u2019s new economic advisory board would seem like an excellent forum for giving progressive economists a voice. There are a number of excellent people whom Obama might not wish to appoint to senior posts but who would be well worth bringing in to offer well-informed alternative views. At the risk of offending those I have forgotten to mention, the names that immediately spring to mind are James Galbraith, Larry Mishel, Dean Baker and Jared Bernstein. <\/p>\n
