Who took my chance?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Over the last few hours, I\u2019ve read some news stories in the American press that many people won\u2019t want to believe or would rather never have read. Others will read them and simply think they don\u2019t concern them. But the harsh reality is what it is, and it will affect us all sooner rather than later. <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"http:\/\/freshfamilyoffice.blogspot.com\/2008\/12\/who-moved-my-value.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The cheese is gone<\/a> It\u2019s all coming to an end for many people, and that\u2019s the reality of the situation, despite the banks\u2019 reports and the political class\u2019s forecasts:<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_VIxOq4VLwLE\/SXIeVecKMzI\/AAAAAAAAAgQ\/5u5Nn_ouTQI\/s1600-h\/Cheese+Block+Wall3.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 285px; height: 495px;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_VIxOq4VLwLE\/SXIeVecKMzI\/AAAAAAAAAgQ\/5u5Nn_ouTQI\/s400\/Cheese+Block+Wall3.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5292325866411012914\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/domesticNews\/idUSN1644134220090116\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Hertz Global Holdings Inc.<\/span> said on Friday that it would cut more than 4,000 jobs as part of a global restructuring programme during the first quarter of 2009 due to a fall in demand. Shares fell by 9%.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601103&amp;sid=a6qMUbVS7wRU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The financial arm of <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">General Electric<\/span> It will cut 11,000 jobs this year.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/hostednews\/ap\/article\/ALeqM5ihLtPrVRccAzJLfiOXGu0YrjqM5AD95OEET80\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">AMD (Advanced Micro Devices Inc.) <\/span>It is cutting 1,100 jobs, representing 9% of its workforce. Last month, a further 600 were made redundant, and 1,600 had already been made redundant earlier in 2008.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iht.com\/articles\/ap\/2009\/01\/16\/america\/Blue-Cross-Job-Cuts.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Blue Cross Blue Shield<\/span> It has announced 1,000 job cuts for 2009 and will, in turn, increase the premiums paid by its policyholders.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/nm\/20090116\/bs_nm\/us_circuitcity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Settlement of<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"> Circuit City Stores<\/span>, announced on Friday that the closure of 567 shops will leave more than 30,000 people out of work.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601103&amp;sid=akZFVbxCPYUs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">WellPoint Inc.<\/span> It is cutting 1,500 jobs and its share price has fallen by 55% over the last 12 months.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/28695935\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Pfizer<\/span> It will cut 2,400 sales staff in the first quarter of 2009. Over the last two years, it has cut a further 15,000 jobs, including 800 researchers earlier this week.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2009\/01\/15\/technology\/google_layoffs.reut\/index.htm?postversion=2009011504\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Up to <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Google<\/span> is planning \u00abredundancy schemes\u00bb\u2026<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">I chose a bad weekend to read the American press. I think I should stop reading the ever-increasing number of newspapers <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">sensationalist<\/span>.
