And most people may be tempted to believe arguments that are often bandied about as if they were universal laws, when in reality they are nothing more than Risky Lies. Before listing around twenty of these, let’s take a look at the five types of investor into which almost all of us mortals can be categorised:

Firstly, there are the pure investors, with an entrepreneurial mindset, and their natural and professional approaches to wealth management (family offices and multi-family offices, for example). Their priority is to invest in sound businesses that will make them money in the long term. And, naturally, by buying excellent businesses at low prices, they protect their wealth from losses very efficiently.

In second place we might place speculators and short-term, ill-informed investors who, with a swarm of banks, advisers and financial managers parasitising around them, flit from one opportunity to the next. In fact, most of them, fed up with losing, merely hope to preserve their assets, though they do nothing but step on landmines and end up disappointed. With this approach, long-term losses are inevitable. That’s what happens when you gamble at roulette instead of investing – and do so whilst believing that the casino manager is looking after our family’s interests. Some of these speculators even display signs of a hidden gambling addiction, although that isn’t essential to going bankrupt.

In a third category we find those whom we might call Juan Palomo, who try to find out for themselves, mistrusting professional advice and attempting to navigate the dodgy offers from their banks, barely managing to stay afloat. Rigour, effort and personal ability will be key to whether these investors fail or survive. But even in the best-case scenario, it will be very difficult for them to optimise the management of their assets, as countless sound investments and useful, minimally sophisticated structures will lie beyond the scope of their knowledge for obvious reasons of scale and specialisation.

We can also distinguish a fourth type of investor, which would include rentiers (heirs or those who have not built up their wealth themselves), who simply want a steady stream of income, as if it were a fixed salary. Interested solely in the enjoyment of their wealth and with no inclination whatsoever towards management, they are easy prey for the banks and other vultures, leaving these investors at the mercy of the greed and predatory behaviour of such scavengers.

Finally, we would have a fifth category – a sort of catch-all category – comprising many people who do not even know what they are themselves, or those who, having a very distorted view of themselves, belong to the second group whilst believing they are investors in the very entrepreneurial style of the first.

Obviously, pure investors are the least common, but For them, it was the past, it is the present, and it will undoubtedly be the future. However, most investors are uninformed, poorly advised or blatantly misled by banks and other advisers (incidentally, I must commend the sincerity and honesty of the author of this article(recently published on Gurusblog).

As we were saying, these second-rate speculators are often fed a diet of fallacies and lies, some of which are even widely accepted as universal truths due to the mediocrity of the financial sector. But these are nothing more than fundamental errors, deceptions and lies, which the vultures of the banking and financial sector take care to force down their prey’s throats, in order to generate greater profits for their businesses.

So here goes then, about twenty Risky Lies which wipe out most family fortunes in just a few years; in other words, those who treat them as articles of faith are putting their wealth at great risk. We hope they serve as a guide and a warning sign in this sea of banking obfuscation, since, in our view, anyone who believes any of it to be true will make decisions that will lead them further and further away from the correct way to optimise the management of their assets:

20 Risky Lies:

The stock market is always riskier than fixed-income investments

Fixed-income investments in developed countries are safer than those in emerging markets

Investing in shares in good companies at good prices carries more risk than investing in Spanish government bonds

Deposits and other products guaranteed by Spanish banks are safe

Property prices in Spain are set to rise once again to levels higher than the peak seen five years ago

A well-let property in Spain protects my assets better than a good international equity fund

With prices having fallen, now is a good time to invest in the Spanish property market

Most of the world’s investment funds are registered for sale in Spain

My bank in Spain allows me to invest in any investment fund I ask for, or it will offer me an equivalent alternative

Funds managed by banks are of the same high quality as those managed by independent fund managers

ETFs are attractive because they ensure I keep pace with the market and have low fees

The best way to invest is to analyse and select the shares and bonds I trust myself

Credit ratings serve as a guide for assessing the risk of my investments

Trading systems and technical analysis have created the world’s greatest fortunes

To make money in the long term on the stock market, you need to invest using technical analysis

A speculator or a technical analyst will achieve better results in the financial markets over the long term than an entrepreneur.

It is the duty of every bank employee or manager to look after their customers’ interests

A bank employee who demonstrates a high standard of ethics and honesty towards their customers has a bright future within the financial institution

The definition of “risk” is the same for investors as it is for banks

Volatility is synonymous with risk

To round things off, a touch of simple, effective wisdom, the last interview given by Álvaro Guzmán, fund manager at Bestinver.

En el mundo de las finanzas y los negocios conviven animales muy distintos, y a veces se mimetizan de tal modo que a primera vista pueden confundir a muchos.
